BURLINGTON, N.C. – Members of The Alliance partnered with New Directions International during a “Feed The Hunger” Pack-A-Thon at Holly Hill Mall on Dec. 6.
The event helped provide non-perishable food for local children and food packs that will feed thousands of children in third-world countries. New Directions International, a non-profit organization based in Alamance County, started helping those in need in 1968. The Pack-A-Thon provides more than 1.5 million meals annually around the world. A typical event produces more than 122,000 meals during two days of packing the food. The meals end up in places like Haiti and Jamaica.
Volunteers work for at least two hours during the events, helping NDI feed at-risk children. The meals contain four ingredients – dehydrated vegetables, a scoop of soy, 19 vitamins and minerals and rice. Each shift produces 25,000 units, which can feed six children for an entire day. NDI projects more than 2 million meals will feed children in eight countries by the end of 2013.
